Last month the AWP (Association of Writers and Writing Programs) Convention was held in Denver, Colorado, followed the next weekend by the Festival of Faith and Writing at Calvin College.
The SPU MFA Program and Image Journal were present for both events at booths with information and items for sale, and were hosts of special panels and receptions.
At AWP, Image organized a reading of poems, fiction, and essay from its recently-published anthology Bearing the Mystery— a “best hits” collection of work published in the journal over its twenty years.
Poets Rich Chess, Pete Fairchild, Martha Serpas, and Gregory Orr participated in the reading, Erin McGraw read fiction, and Pattiann Rogers read a personal essay, giving listeners a taste of the variety of literature contained in this volume.
On the final evening of the event, SPU and Image co-hosted an anniversary celebration (twenty years for the journal and five for the MFA program). The event was attended by many in the Image community, former SPU MFA students, and writers and students met for the first time at the Convention.
The next weekend brought SPU and Image to the biennial Festival of Faith and Writing, which seeks to congregate readers and writers in “a vibrant community where people…discuss, celebrate, and explore the ways in which faith is represented in literature and how it plays out in our world today.”
Again, Image and SPU hosted a celebration to reunite with friends within the community, while introducing newcomers to MFA students and faculty, as well as artists and authors featured in the journal.
If you weren’t able to make either of these events this year, be sure to look for us next February at the AWP Convention in Washington, D.C., and at the Festival of Faith and Writing in 2012. It’s a great way to make contact with our program, ask questions in person, and find out more about all we have to offer. We’ll see you there!
